Pack(ag)ing a Pun(ch)

December 12th, 2024 | by Mark Beard

"Just like our entire brand philosophy of being scrappy-smart - using the least, the quickest, to make the best - we iterate…constantly. We believe it is the true definition of design - a constant state of improvement."

"Just like our entire brand philosophy of being scrappy-smart - using the least, the quickest, to make the best - we iterate…constantly. We believe it is the true definition of design - a constant state of improvement."

We believe it is the true definition of design - a constant state of improvement. So together with Peter and Robby, every production sprint that requires us to revisit packaging (we try to keep our inventory of packaging extremely lean), we seek to better the packaging system we had previously.

Before we even had a product to launch, we started designing a system of tubes to carry our bottles (we still think they look cool) but then realized that all shipping companies charge a surcharge for anything that will roll…So we tried a Toblerone shape, then an octagon, then quickly realized that we were off-course in our brand values of performance with a smile and came back to a simple structure (a box) but with a really fun attitude.

“Iteration & improvement…What we like to think is the definition of design - not static - but a constant state of improvement”

When we set out to design our packaging, we knew we wanted to do something different - something that didn’t just look good but worked smarter and left a lighter footprint. Our approach was rooted in the idea that less is more. We focused on using a minimal amount of materials, balancing a commitment to sustainability with the strength and durability needed to protect our products in transit. Every inch of our packaging is purposeful, designed to deliver what matters without excess.

Simplicity guided our choice of materials. We wanted each part of our packaging to be as easily recyclable as possible, ensuring a seamless transition from opening to disposal. This led us to avoid materials that would complicate the recycling process, like mixed plastics, and opt instead for materials that can be easily sorted and recycled. For adhesives, where possible, we’ve swapped out traditional glues for water-based alternatives, cutting down on any excess chemicals in our production line. This way, every part of our packaging has a second life waiting.

We'll always leave room for surprise and delight with a personal touch.

But it wasn’t all about restraint- we also wanted our packaging to feel unique and engaging. We found opportunities to add a touch of fun, like our water drop die-cut hanger system, which not only brings a bit of personality to each product, but also serves a functional purpose. It’s a small detail, but it reinforces our philosophy that practical can be playful too. The result is a system that’s as simple as it is memorable.

In the spirit of simplicity and reducing waste, we chose to forgo poly-bags around our products. Instead, we use recycled paper wraps, adding another layer of environmental consideration without sacrificing presentation.

This choice means we avoid adding more plastic to the waste stream, creating a more circular approach to product protection and branding.

We never wanted to ship a box within a box just to keep up appearances. Instead, our outer box is crafted to feel as intentional as what’s inside. For online orders, this means our customers get the full brand experience from the moment they see the package on their doorstep with no poly-bag filters or pellets required. In every way, our packaging reflects our values–scrappy, conscious, designed with a purpose, and always, with a sense of fun (and often pun…feel free to roll your eyes now!)

Finally, our shipping box was designed to act as our ‘brand box’ all in one. While we know that stickers and shopping always scuff up a box on your doorstep, we also know our Bivo customer is simply excited about what’s in the box. So we focused there, placing modular structures that hold your Bivo in a safe place, while still having fun with hidden messaging inside the box.

No glue. No fancy coatings. No worries.

We haven’t yet implemented it, but we have done quite a bit of exploration into how we can better use our 6-pack and 24-pack cartons for our large retailer orders.

We did have a fun way to think about our boxes in the back of retail shops and inventory shelves. The idea was to bring in illustrators to use the sides of our boxes as a little canvas and at the very least, bring a bit more visual joy to what can be a pretty brown existence back there.

So we had a couple of Bivo friends use the box canvas as a little way to bring some joy to the back rooms of bike shops!! If you'd like to be featured here or know anyone in the cycling industry who would like to be on our next box print run, feel free to drop a comment below.

"We like to think of the entire life cycle (pun intended) of our products and how they are packaged"

Inevitably, with growth, comes more packaging of products to bring to the world. We know that we’re not a zero waste organization and (although we’d love that to be a reality), we’re realists. We have an eye on the future, not just of our brand, but the world in which we play. The trails, rivers, public lands, and all the communities that love and support getting on two wheels and moving your legs!

We're excited for our next series of products and packaging challenges that come with that... With any luck, you'll all get to see more of them in 2025 and beyond.
