The Woman Behind the Lens: Bivo’s Studio Photography Shots!

January 22nd, 2026 | by Mark Beard

I’ve been working with Pavlina Summers as a creative collaborator for almost 15 years now. We’ve worked as colleagues, partnered on image-making for global furniture brands, made freelance projects together and crawled in sand dunes in the rain on multi day shoots … Always to get the right shot.

Pav has the perfect blend of lateral creative thinking and attention to lighting detail. She analyzes and improves the in-camera look of every tiny reflection, refraction and zephyr of light which has helped us capture every drop of water that our Gravity Flow can throw at us!

Recently, I worked with Pav to capture Bivo’s Spring 2026 colors. And some of my favorite Bivo shots ever came out of this shoot. Objectively it's hard to play favorites with Bivo as we try to make all our shots as meaningful and as fun as possible, but the serendipitous shots of our best mate, Lindsay, truly capture the essence of Bivo’s blend of fun and performance.

We’re excited for all of you to get to know Pav, as she’s truly integral to the studio shots you see here at Bivo!

What got you into photography and image making originally?

What got you into photography and image making originally?

My parents had a close family friend who was an exceptional photographer, and I was always drawn to the images he made of us. They carried a genuine documentary quality, and were intimate and full of life.

I received my first 35mm East German Praktica camera from my high school boyfriend, and I took it with me everywhere. Before long, I was developing my own prints in my parents’ bathroom, and that’s really where it all began.

Challenge: How many Bivos can you carry at one time?

Who are some of your inspirations (now or in the past) in the world of image making and art direction?

The first photographer I loved was Josef Sudek, a Czech artist best known for his still lifes and photographs of Prague. Later, in college, I discovered many more photographers who influenced me—Irving Penn, Mary Ellen Mark, Robert Mapplethorpe, Wolfgang Tillmans, Sally Mann, Nan Goldin, and many others—as well as my professor Pavel Banka. Mark Hooper, whom I assisted, was the one who truly taught me the ropes of the craft.

We started working together during the pandemic. I met Carina when she was collaborating with Cinco Design—where I worked as an in-house photographer—on some product design. Mark Beard, now Bivo’s Creative Director, was at Cinco at the time, and he and I became good friends.

Tell us the funniest story you’ve ever experienced shooting on set!

Tell us the funniest story you’ve ever experienced shooting on set!

There are so many fun moments during our shoots, but my favorite is always the genuine surprise on set when we capture Bivo’s amazing water flow. What begins with careful sips often ends in full-on, spontaneous water bottle showers.

We’ve also had dogs on set a few times, and they’re always absolute stars. Despite flashing lights and loud music, they’re endlessly sweet and good-natured.

What’s your favorite subject to shoot and why?

What’s your favorite subject to shoot and why?

I love shooting literally anything with good light—it's what always draws me in.
When I photograph people, they never fail to surprise me, bringing something unique to each shot, which I love.

What’s the biggest challenge of capturing the Bivo flow on camera?

The biggest challenge and the most fun, is always the water. It flows so fast and sprays everywhere, so you have to be ready to start shooting the moment it begins to move.

In your eyes, how have Bivo’s visuals evolved and changed over time as you’ve been shooting for us?

Our imagery keeps evolving. With a clear visual style established, we’re getting bolder and experimenting more. Each new Bivo colorway gives us fresh hues to play with and inspiration to draw from. We’re always finding ways to make each round of images feel fresh and surprising.
