Warm Liquids in a Bivo?

October 24th, 2024 | by Keaton Smith

Last week, Vermont had its first snow in the mountains (eleven inches on top of Mt Mansfield!!), and everyone’s already talking about bringing out the merino wool base layers and tuning their skis, despite the current 70° conditions.

Personally, I can’t wait for adventures out in Bolton’s snowy backcountry woods, whether that’s in the pitch dark before work or on a dreamy Saturday afternoon.

As temperatures start to turn, more and more Bivo users start using their bottles for skiing and other snowy activities. And we often get the question from our customers: Can I put warm liquids in my Bivos? We wanted to make sure all of you had the right information to share with your customers on warm drinks + Bivo bottles. As always, let us know if you have any questions!

Yes, we love putting WARM (not hot) liquids in our insulated Bivo Trios!

And we know all of our customers do too 😉 That’s part of why an insulated metal bottle is so great! Last winter, after Bolton got enough snow to go skiing in late November, Carina, Robby, and the rest of the crew headed up for a pre work skin and Robby surprised all of us with a Bivo full of warm cappuccino for everyone. It was the perfect treat to warm up before getting the first turns of the season.

However, Bivos aren’t intended to be used with hot water.

Why? Our bottles have a very high flow rate that could lean to burns from hot water. Additionally, putting boiling hot water into our bottles with the Gravity Flow lid can lead to pressure build up inside, and when the nozzle gets opened with that much pressure, hot water could squirt up. We just don’t want anyone to get hurt!

Please be smart and reasonable with the temps of liquids you put in your bottles!

After Lily, our new event specialist, jumped into the river on a 49 degree October day (and stayed in for like 15 minutes!) the only thing that could get her to stop shivering was a Bivo full of peppermint tea. While everyone else was enjoying their final creemees of the season, Lily was wrapped up in a blanket and sipping her tea that was still warm after she had prepared it hours before.
